David Lagnado (Psychology, University College London)

Marion Vorms (Psychology, Birkbeck College London & Philosophy, Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne)

About the conference
The conference will bring together scholars from various disciplines (psychology, epistemology, philosophy of science, law, statistics) and practicing professionals (lawyers/judges, clinicians, climate scientists, forensic scientists, journalists) to work towards an understanding of reasoning and decision-making under uncertainty through the lens of the notion of ‘reasonable doubt’. The goal is not only to encourage interdisciplinary dialogue, but also to pay particular attention to everyday practice.

This should shed new light on epistemological and psychological questions about the nature and dynamics of belief and action, as well as on difficult judicial issues. Fostering such a dialogue among disciplines, and between researchers and practitioners, should also have implications for currently pressing societal issues such as the role and credentials of experts in democracy, conspiracy theories, science denial, and the epistemology and psychology of the social media — in short, societal concerns rooted in the difficulty of navigating an overwhelming mass of information.

A l’IJN (ENS), Présentation de l’ouvrage “Cognitive Unconscious and Human Rationality” avec leurs auteurs

Jeudi 22 Septembre à 17h

Institut Nicod, Ecole normale supérieure, 29, rue d’Ulm 75005 Paris
Salle de Réunion, RDC.

Rencontre avec Laura Macchi (Université Milano-Bicocca) et Riccardo Viale (Université LUISS-Rome) autour de leur dernier ouvrage:

COGNITIVE UNCONSCIOUS AND HUMAN RATIONALITY  (MIT Press, 2016)

La rencontre sera modérée par Gloria Origgi (IJN).

Description de l’ouvrage :

This volume contributes to a current debate within the psychology of thought that has wide implications for our ideas about creativity, decision making, and economic behavior. The essays focus on the role of implicit, unconscious thinking in creativity and problem solving, the interaction of intuition and analytic thinking, and the relationship between communicative heuristics and thought. The analyses move beyond the conventional conception of mind informed by extra-psychological theoretical models toward a genuinely psychological conception of rationality—a rationality no longer limited to conscious, explicit thought, but able to exploit the intentional implicit level. The contributors consider a new conception of human rationality that must cope with the uncertainty of the real world; the implications of abandoning the normative model of classic logic and adopting a probabilistic approach instead; the argumentative and linguistic aspects of reasoning; and the role of implicit thought in reasoning, creativity, and its neurological base.
