Welcome to Professor Darya Filatova

DaryaFialtova120

PARIS Reasoning is very pleased to welcome Professor Darya Filatova of Institute of Pedagogy and Psychology (Computer Science Department) Jan Kochanowski University (ujk) in Kielce, Poland from 10 February to 16 March 2014.

Darya is a specialist of stochastic processes, stochastic calculus, stochastic optimization and optimal control methods which are used in theoretical biology and ecology, demography, finance and economics, signal processing and telecommunication, physics and chemistry, etc. … The main goal of her research is to show the modern conceptions of stochastic analysis, the examples of the solution of the applied tasks, especially in pedagogy and psychology, and to create some new dynamic methods for qualitative and quantitative analysis for social sciences.

New Paradigm Psychology of Reasoning Conference

Thursday, 28th  of November, Bâtiment Le France, 10h-12h, SALLE 123,  EPHE, 190-198 avenue de France, 75013 Paris

10h – Ken Manktelow, Wolverhampton University:

Domain-specificity and delusional thinking

People who are not diagnosed as clinically delusional can still exhibit varying levels of delusional ideation, and this tendency can be seen in their thinking, most commonly in the form of a jump-to-conclusions (JTC) bias. In a study of 96 people, we found that the JTC bias was subject to subtle content and contextual influences. The existence of these effects, and the JTC bias in general, raise questions for the characterisation of rationality in new-paradigm approaches to the psychology of reasoning.

11h – David Over, Durham University:

Integrating the study of reasoning and judgment and decision making in the new psychology of reasoning

The new paradigm in the psychology of reasoning is a reflection of the great impact Bayesian approaches are having in cognitive psychology and cognitive science generally. The new developments are rightly called a paradigm shift, since they bring with them a new logic as the standard of correct reasoning. This standard itself rests on the even more fundamental notion of coherence, which is also the standard for rational probability judgment. Thus the paradigm shift opens up the possibility of integrating the fields of the psychology of reasoning and of judgment and decision making.

Peter Brugger joins in

Peter Brugger, professor in neuropsychology in the University Hospital of Zürich (Switzerland) is joining PARIS-team as an associate member. We are pleased and honored to welcome Peter.

Peter has always been interested in how chance and randomness affect behavior and thought, both in animals and human beings. A specialty is the pitfalls of sequential randomness in the scenario of guessing (e.g. in parapsychology experiments) and the proclivity to “see” meaning in random configurations (which is pronounced for believers in the paranormal). In more recent times, Peter and colleagues have established the method of random number generation as a means to explore the embodied nature of numerical representations.

More information about Peter available on researchgate website.

Jing Shao joins in

Our colleague Jing Shao from the University of Upper Alsace in Colmar (France) is now a member of PARIS-reasoning. Jing is associate professor in developmental psychology. Her research area comprises problem solving and reasoning in children.

Having scholar connections in China, she may also investigate inter-cultural differences in reasoning.

PARIS joins the Reasoning Club

PARIS team is now a member of the Reasoning Club, hosted by the University of Kent (UK), an association of research institutions from a dozen countries around the world. The Reasoning Club facilitates free movement of researchers between organizations and foster the exchange of ideas among researchers working on reasoning-related topics.

We thank Julien Murzi (the club director) and all the staff of the Reasoning Club who kindly welcomed our team.
